Shop Talk: All about Paraffin...

As the temperature drops approaching this season, how can we save our rough, dry cracked winter-worn hands and feet? Paraffin is an excellent way to hydrate and moisturize because the treatment forms a light waterproof coating over your skin that helps it retain the oils produced by your body.

Paraffin wax is a softer wax because of the paraffin oil component. Because it is a soft wax, it melts at a lower than normal temperature. This means that the skin can be submerged in the wax without causing burning or blistering. Spa specialists melt blocks of paraffin wax in special vats. During paraffin wax treatments, beauticians have their clients dip their hands or feet into the melted wax one or more times to coat the skin in a generous layer. The hands or feet are then wrapped in plastic, or some other non-absorbent material and left to "soak" in the layer of wax for up to half an hour.

Shop Talk: Base Coats and Top Coats

Why are base and top coats essential in a nail polish application?

Base and top coats are applied to help polish adhere to nails and prevents nails form chipping and breaking. The clear base coat is first applied to the natural nail to secure to the nail bed and act as an adhesive bed for the pigment to fasten. Top coat is applied over the nail polish to seal in the color and protect it.

For base coat Shine suggests: OPI's natural nail base coat

For top coat Shine suggests: Seche Vite

Seche Vite™ dry fast top coat is widely acknowledged as the world's finest top coat. Specially formulated to penetrate through nail lacquer to the base coat forming a single solid coating over the nail plate for a much more durable finish. Guaranteed not to yellow while leaving nails silky, stronger and resistant to chipping and peeling.

Shop Talk: How safe is your pedicure?

How safe is your pedicure??

During the spring/summer months pretty peep toe pumps and flirty flip flops are a must. For women polished pedicure's go hand and hand (or foot and foot in this case). But how safe is your pedicure?

While you are relaxing those tired, aching feet in the water, have you ever stopped to think about the safety risks. I'm pretty sure one time or another, the thought has crossed your mind but you sit there stare down at the blue water and hope for the best.

Although unsanitary practices crossed my mind, never in a million years did I think that a pedicure could be dangerous until I watched a 20/20 documentary about nail salons in the US and watched in horror at scars that were left on the legs of women who fell victim to unsanitary pedicures. In most cases the women and men needed weeks of antibiotic treatments but some required surgery to reduce the appearance of scars.

I then thought about the nail salon that I visit religiously every 3 weeks, and suddenly a knot in my throat told me that it's very possible that the "quick rinse" that my nail lady performs before my pedicure was not clean at all. To confirm my suspicions, I returned to the nail salon to observe while getting a fill for my nails.

On a busy Saturday afternoon I sat and watched at least 2 turn around cycles of clients getting pedicures. Vietnamese as my first language, I could understand all the hustle and bustle of  the nail technicians asking each other who's client was next to sit in the "whirlpool massage chairs" and if the chairs had been cleaned. They would then spray the tub with an "unknown" solution, wipe it down with a sponge, the total process? Less than 2 minutes. I was terrified, not an expert in correct sanitation procedures, even I knew that there was no way it could have disinfected properly in those 2 short minutes.

I went home to google some ways to reduce my risk of bacterial infections and blood borne illnesses while receiving services at the nail salon. I'm sharing these suggestions to everyone, hoping that one day there will be a strict sanitation plan put in place for ALL nail salons!

1) ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS! The first thing I would ask my nail technician is "How are your implements sanitized or disinfected?" If for one second, she hesitates or has to ask someone, that should be a clear sign that there is NO sanitation plan or she has not been trained.

2) Bring your own emery boards, toe separators, and buffers. These items should be thrown away after each use. Some salons will reuse them to cut down overhead cost. Some salons these days will provide a new set for each client, either storing them at the salon or letting clients bring them home.

3) Ask the pedicurist to remove the filter and disinfect it before she fills the foot spa with water. I'm sure that they will be less than thrilled about your request, but if they want your business, they will do it. Better yet, choose a salon that uses removable basins or bowls, old school but clean!

4) If the person doing your pedicure is not wearing gloves, ask her/him to wash their hands before putting them in your water.

The pedicure process should be a pleasant experience and most importantly CLEAN!! Spread the word, and let's keep our toes and feet fabulous!

Shop Talk: SHELLAC vs GELISH

SHELLAC vs GELISH... I frequently get asked all the time, what's the difference between these two hybrid gel polishes? I simply put it...its like choosing between COKE & PEPSI.
Both companies have been leading the nail industry with their nail products for decades and have now perfected their own versions of the "gel soak off" system. SHELLAC offers 30 colors and GELISH offers 72 colors.

If you are not familiar or haven't heard what the buzz is all about, these products apply like regular nail polish, wears like gel and removes in minutes. Its pretty exciting, nail color that lasts for weeks without chipping. Imagine typing or doing house chores without any worry of ruining your nails.

The pretty process...

Booking an appointment, you can either ask for a "SHELLAC manicure/pedicure or GELISH manicure/pedicure. Prices should range between $15-$25 added on top of a manicure or pedicure.

When arriving to your appointment, you will be asked to choose a color. A manicure or pedicure should then follow. Your nails are then ready for the gel application.

The application...
1) The natural shine of the nails should have been lightly buffed off.
2) A cleanser/nail prep solution is then applied.
3) A base coat is applied, then cured in a UV light for 30 seconds - 2 minutes, depending on the type of light.
4) At least 2 coats of colors are applied, cured again in the UV light.
5) Your nails are then finished with a top coat, cured for the last time in the UV light, then the cleanser is to wipe off the tacky surface.

It's that simple! Say good bye to chips and smudges. You're now ready to have weeks of long lasting color. At SHINE NAIL BAR. we offer both SHELLAC and GELISH. Let one of our nail technicians help you choose over 50+ colors available.

What's HOT: ZOYA remove+ 3-in-1 nail polish remover

3-in-1 formula + by ZOYA featured in August 2011 issue
SHINE NAIL BAR is excited to introduce Zoya's 3-in-1 nail polish remover. As seen in In Style & Allure magazines this month, we had to see what all the buzz was about so we set it to the test. Without a doubt this polish remover, removed dark and glitter nail polishes in a snap! Good enough to work in our salon, gentle enough to use at home.

Zoya's REMOVE + 3-in-1 does it all. Removes old polish, cleans nails and preps for new color. Mild acetone formula moisturizes, nourishes and fortifies nail plate. Use as a nail plate prep cleaner before applying basecoat to significantly increase lacquer wear.

We were so happy with this product we decided to share the love with our clients. For the month of September we are giving away a travel size bottle of this liquid gold with any service while supplies last.

Shop Talk: Gel Nails vs Acrylic Nails

Day in and day out, the #1 question asked everyday in the salon is "What's the difference between Gel Nails and Acrylic Nails?"

If you're questioning whether to choose Gel nails or Acrylic nails, here is the 411 on both to compare and determine what best suits your needs.

Acrylic Nails 101

Acrylic Nails are currently more popular than gel nails, reason being they have been around longer, which probably accounts for their popularity. Acrylics can be whole or partial, used over the entire nail or simply as tips. A mixture of liquid acrylic (monomer) and polymer, which is an acrylic powder, is applied to the nail. It hardens on its own fairly quickly, usually within minutes.

Pros of Acrylic Nails:
  • The removal process is simple and straightforward if done by a professional. The nails can be soaked rather than filed off.
  • Acrylics are very strong. When done correctly and with proper nail care they can last a long time. They're robust!
Cons of Acrylic Nails:
  • They can damage your real nails in a harsher manner than gel nails can.
  • Acrylics can look less natural than gel nails, especially if done incorrectly.

Gel Nails 101

Gel Nails is typically a pre-mixed polymer and monomer gel that is first applied to the nails and then cured under ultra-violet lights.

Pros of Gel Nails:
  • Gel nails often look more natural and glossy than other types of cosmetic nails.
  • The curing time is faster than acrylics, sometimes clocking in at just two minutes when light-curing is done.
  • Gel nail mixtures are odorless.
  • There is less filing involved during the application process.
 Cons of Gel Nails:
  • They don't last as long and are less durable than acrylic, even though they tend to cost more.
  • Nail polish may not stick to the gel finish as well as it does to an acrylic finish.
  • Gel nails almost always need to be filed off. You can't just soak them away.

Nail Care: How to remove dark or glitter polishes at home with ease?

We all love glitz and glitter nails and beautiful bold polishes, but taking them off can be a time consuming chore. If you do not have time to visit a salon for a professional polish removal here's an easy way to remove stubborn dark or glitter nail polishes from home in three easy steps. You will need acetone (nail polish remover), cotton balls or pads, and regular house hold foil.

1) Cut or tear 10 small pieces of foil, enough to wrap around each finger.
2) Soak a cotton ball/pad with acetone, then place it over the nail. To keep cotton ball/pad in place use a piece of foil to cover the entire finger. Repeat on all ten fingers.
3) Leave on for 3-5 minutes, remove and your done!

Acetone/Nail polish remover can dry out your cuticles, to keep your cuticles and nails moisturized. Shine Nail Bar suggests: AVOPLEX nail & cuticle replenishing oil by OPI.

Style Profile : Vanessa Hudgens

To get a rocker-chic look, let one nail stand out from the rest. Vanessa Hudgens played up her turquoise ring by wearing a rich green nail polish color on one finger.

Shine Nail Bar suggests: "Hypnotic" by SPAritual, a sharpe shimmering gun metal grey, and "Swimsuit Nail it" by OPI's Miss Universe Collection, a bling blue for the accent finger.

Style Profile : Toni Braxton

All-white clothes were all over the spring runways, but we think white looks just as pretty polished on Toni Braxton’s fingertips. Opt for an opaque nail shade to get this mod look, or layer it with a pearly topcoat for a bit of sophisticated shimmer.

Shine Nail Bar suggests: "Alpine Snow" by OPI in either in the classic white or matte.

Style Profile : Lauren Conrad

A denim-inspired nail polish shade.
Some people match their shoes or purse to their outfit, but why not make your fingertips your boldest accessory instead? Lauren Conrad coordinates her manicure with her miniskirt and keeps the rest of the look muted.

Shine Nail Bar suggests: "Russian Navy Suede" by OPI, a matte daring denim blue.

Style Profile : Alyssa Miller

Some nail trends to try this summer....Counterbalance dangerously sexy stilettos, like swimsuit model Alyssa Miller does here, with a pretty pastel hue. Lilac nail polish looks fierce surrounded by studs!

Shine Nail Bar suggests: "Planks a Lot" by OPI's Pirate of Caribbean Collection, a cute lilac purple or "Reveal Yourself" by SPAritual, a pale pretty pink.
